Why so much debate over Opening Rolls?

You raise good points. I often double to intimidate, and I might double quickly hoping to get a drop etc. These are ploys that I consider ethical. As with all ethical questions, it's a fine line.
If I sit down with someone who I don't know and we are playing for $5 a point and I hope to get him to play me for $50 a point, is it ethical for me to play poorly at $5 a point to hustle him? I happen to think that is not honest...others call it hustling.
If asked about my experience, and I don't honestly say I am an open player, I would call that dishonest.
Intentionally making a bad play at the beginning of a game to throw him off, either to play for more or to take more liberties with the cube, in my book, is not honest. I can certainly see why you lump that in with the other "ploys" you describe, and again, I don't have a black and white answer as to where to draw the line.
If I sit down with a stranger and he doubles me and I say, "what does that cube mean" as if I don't understand how the doubling cube works, when in fact I know damn well what it means...is that dishonest? I think so....some might say it's a ploy. I guess everyone has to decide where they draw the line. To me, anything that is intentionally meant to give a false impression is at least questionable. Trying to intimidate someone by giving the cube quickly or taking quickly, to me, is on the okay side of the line.
