Japan Open

Hi Stick:
Attendance in the beginner and intermediate fields was up quite a bit, I'm told. The Championship was about the same as last year. But the Open was down from 46 to 41. Can you believe some idiots chose Prague over Tokyo?
The gaijin contingent this year consisted of me, Don Thompson (getting better all the time), Gabe Davis (who is running the BG club in Pattaya), Robin Swaffield, the Hong Kong veteran, and a newcomer named Rich Arnold, a Dutchman who lives in K.L.
Four of the biggest names in Japanese backgammon were also missing: Michy and Mochy were in Prague; Abe and Yazawa were busy planning their wedding. Otherwise, like Don, the Japanese get better every year.
By the way, in his speech last night (there was, as Sam mentioned elsewhere, a party for Mochy in Ginza) Mochy credited his high school chums for getting him in the game. Kaneko speculated that their high school in Hiroo may have been the best backgammon high school (new category) as he, Mochy, and Yazawa all ettended it. I nominated Susquehanna as the "best BG Kaisha." (Company, for you gaijin.) At one time Howard Ring, Neil Kazaross, David Wells, and Rick Lloyd worked together, and that was just the Chicago office. (And Howard tried several times to recruit me, but having a job seemed too much like work.)
Below is the Othello link, as supplied to me yesterday by the man himself.
Best,
Jake
