Hardly ever - if you mean estimating actual numbers rather than saying "looks pretty gammonish".
The need for photographic memory and fancy number crunching over the board is overestimated by many in my opinion. If the bots can make checker play decisions with great accuracy based purely on experience while never being able to really tell you "why", it should not be any less surprising that top human players can make correct cube decisions largely in the same manner.
The question is assuming that I actually remember or bother to figure out the exact takepoint, gammon price, etc. which I usually don't.
