I'm pretty sure Magriel never said anything directly about the race. Also, my recollection is "anchor", not "advanced anchor". I.e. compare the following conditions for BOTH players:

1) number of checkers back,

2) number of made homeboard points,

3) anchor (or not).

So in this position, two of the three comparisons favor "bold" while the third is neutral.

Of course I'm away from my library (Murphy's Law -- and not Daniel) but here is what Tom has on his website:
