In Response To: Factors for Tournament Attendance? (adambulldog)

1. Hospitality 2. Cost to get to the event, cost and quality of the hotel, cost of entry fees 3. If I am the auctioneer, I am sure to attend. 4. Lectures...I have learned and enjoyed them very much over the years, and I also enjoy giving them myself. 5. Tournament structure: I love Swiss and Modified Swiss 6. Side events. I would go out of my way to go to a tournament that featured Backgammon-to-lose, which is my favorite. I would love to go if there is a gin game, poker night, tennis or racquetball tournament...even if these are not officially connected to the event. 7. If the ABT would change the point system so that you get points for every win, and not just for cashing, I know that I, and many others, would have a much better reason to attend more tournaments. Right now, I know my chances of getting points are small, but with a revised system, I would be greatly encouraged to go, and I know others would too. (Only reason not to do this that I have heard is the bookkeeping. I volunteer to do the bookkeeping myself! It's that easy with excel spread sheets.) 8. If the entry fees were lower, particularly in the non-Open division, I know more people would attend. Even in the Open, the entry fee could be lower and the side pools higher (or staggered) for those who want more action. 9. If they paid more places, more people would come...I would come more. Take a little off the top and make sure that all quarter-finalists got their entry fee back, and I bet attendance would go up, and the winners wouldn't miss the dollars a bit. 10. Time of year. I am much more likely to go to Florida in the winter and to Minnesota in the summer. 11. I would go out of my way to go to events that allow matches to be played on the computer if both players consent; that would allow baffle boxes if either player requests; and that broadcast the finals and semi-final matches on to a big screen or on the internet with commentary for spectators. 12. Relative to tournament staff, the most important is the director....I want a director who insists on keeping the tournament on schedule and instantly penalizes anyone who is late, acts in an unsportsmanlike manner, or breaks any rule.
