In Response To: Factors for Tournament Attendance? (Rich Munitz)

It is a bad thing if 5 of those people that went to Bozeman will not attend another ABT event.

That seems to assume that there was a chance that those five people would attend another tournament. Did they all fly in from Chicago or Houston ? Doubt it. Or did four come from Bozeman, and maybe one from Boise?

Point is, if we're talking about "attracting players," well, which players?

There's a hard core that attends many ABT events anywhere in the country. And others who attend the handful of tournaments in their region. And others who don't attend any except the one nearest them (and perhaps an occasional trip to Vegas or Flint or L.A.). I don't see how limiting the number of ABT events is good for attracting any of these groups. Especially the local players -- it can't be bad for any local organization to sponsor one tournament a year with the added prestige of ABT sanction -- and attracting them is fundamentally the key to building a robust national backgammon schedule.

It'd be revealing, I think, to compile a list of everyone who attended any ABT event in the last two years (including non-open divisions), and see how many tournaments everyone actually attended. And then figure out how best to encourage greater attendance by the hard core, the occasional and the once a year players. Facts are always good to have as the basis of a discussion.
