Re: Double 4s

One thing I try and keep my eyes on is holding a double anchor where one of them is the 18-point. This isn't usually a very strong structure and often the two points clash. Both 18- and 20-points in particular don't go well together. Another thing worth remembering is that it is seldom good to own the 18-point when holding a substantial race lead. Thus getting off the 18-point is going to be part of my play. I see no advantage to leaving one checker there so I start with 18/14(2).
There are two attractive continuations: 13/9(2) and 24/20, 10/6. The 9-point is a great blocking point here so the question is: how bad is leaving the two split checkers on the 24- and 18-points? Another question: can I cash this game with either play? I.e. Maybe I don't need the 9-point to win this game in which case I should guard against getting the two back checkers in a bind. Here, though, I think White will have a Take next turn regardless of what I play.
It is worth noting that 24/20, 10/6 doesn't leave a classic TMP since either the 14-point or the 13-point can be expended next turn.
There's such nice connetivity after 24/20, 10/6 that I'm choosing that play.
Summary: 18/14(2), 24/20, 10/6.
