Very common.

I saw a very good player recently, one who knew better, take off a fourth checker when he was crunched to the 1-2-3 points -- with opponent with 2 in the air and a closed board -- even though the cost of the fourth checker off was leaving himself odd with three checkers on his three point. Obviously, going from three checkers off to four checkers off (with no future misses), does not save a roll. And, of course, the dice gods frowned on him -- he left a shot on the next roll, got hit, and lost the game.
