I've made the comment to players who smooth/fill in the bear-off rather than just take two checkers off that "rather than protecting against the 'future' bad roll, you just 'took' the bad roll !!".

I won a match against a guy one time who had one checker to get home from his 10 point to start bearing off. It was DMP and he was a bit ahead in the race. He rolled 1-1 and left the guy on the 10, he smoothed/filled internally. His next roll? 1-1 again. Rather than taking off three checkers (as he could otherwise have done) he got to play 10/6 with the second roll.
