Questions for Lurkers

In Response To: Questions for Lurkers (W Womack)

I have a web site that is getting several hundred hits a day...I think it is because I post a new, interesting position every day, and I have articles and fun stuff on it too. I thought about creating a blog or forum on that site so that people could comment and interact, but I have chosen NOT TO because I think this web site already provides that very well for the players.

If we start having several places to go for the kind of discussions we have on Stick's site, I think that would dilute this site and our ability to go to one place to look for comments and discussions about backgammon in general, like we have here.

I would hate to have to check 3 or 4 different sites to see what is going on and what is being talked about.

So my best advice to Lurkers is this: Don't be afraid to post. Even if you ask a very basic, simple question that the experts take for granted or have no interest in, others will be happy to answer the question or take part in the discussion if they have an interest.

For example, what if someone posted a question here like: "I like bringing 2 down with an opening 4-2 roll instead of making the 4 point. Can someone tell me why making the 4 point is better?"

I don't think the answers would be ridicule...people would simply understand that this question came from a beginner who is not very knowledgeable about the game, and I know that I, or others, would politely explain that it is about the odds of winning as proven by experience and the bots that we make the 4 point. We might suggest a bot, or a book or two, or I might even send them an article on opening moves that explains why some moves are better than others and why it is best to stick to those moves.

So I encourage you NOT to start another blog, but to be more vocal here and not be afraid to make comments or ask questions.

If we do see someone make fun of people or belittle people for asking questions or making comments that show they are not knowledgeable about the game, I know you would see many of us come to their defense and chastise the person who is condescending or ridicules others.
