MCG "The other obstacle is that BG, unlike Chess, Othello, or Go, uses dice."
Neil replies .. yes and this will be a huge obstacle getting BG into public schools. I mean, WTF, the bleeding heart liberals that are making it less and less fun to live in this country in some districts don't even allow teachers to refer to dice as dice and they have to be called "numbers cubes". Oh..and just so you don't think that I am taking sides, the overly selfrightous uber-conservatives are equally at fault,IMO.
Years ago I tought chess at my daughter's Montessori school. My daughter also told them that I was a champion BG player so I bought a few BG sets for the school and taught some BG also to the kids. One of the kids called the doubling cube, "the gambling cube" and I quickly explained that we use it for tournament play to increase the number of points at stake during a game. Another parent happened by at that time, and she was pleased with my explanation and convinced that I wasn't teaching gambling to the kids.
HOWEVER, try to teach BG..in most public schools..just try and good luck in this "politically correct" climate. Do you really think that a school administrator or principle would risk fucking up a cushy and greatly overpaid and often 200K a year job if some parent(s) even thought about questioning why a "gambling game" was being introduced to the kids at school.
Honestly, there more be more chance to get our government to admit that aliens did crash land at Roswell (assuming they really did) than to get BG widespread in public schools.
The ways to get BG to grow are as follows:
1) Get it on TV and do a real good job of it so people will watch a 2nd and 3rd time and try the game.
2) INTERNET INTERNET INTERNET. We need to get more internet players to come both to weekly club events and to ABT-type events.
3) Look at what Carlsberg Beer sponsership has done for BG in Denmark. However, that sort of thing wouldn't be politically correct here in the states and many bar owners would be concerned about cops showing up looking for gambling and under aged players. Here in the increasingly overgoverned US, one thing is for sure and that is if it can't be taxed we shouldn't be doing it.
