I absolutely agree that a goal of actively trying to recruit children to live tournaments is not where efforts should be focused. Those that really want to come will come anyway. And with parents who already know what to expect. But for the most part, let them play in the major leagues after they graduate.

The old times are gone where children would learn to play the game because their parents and family and friends of family played and there was nothing else to do at home to fill idle time on a rainy day but play board games because there was no cable and no computers and no video games.

The species of backgammon players in this part of the world has largely stopped reproducing. Without new approaches to attract the young to the the game, it will die. I don't know what the answer is. But doing nothing and saying everything is just fine the way it is will not solve the problem. Children do not want to play backgammon with adults. But I bet they would play with their friends if they were all put together and shown how and allowed to play long enough to discover that it is actually fun.

Backgammon may be a gambling game to some, but there are plenty of parts of the world where it is very popular and not generally played as a gambling game.
