Changing the terminology will only go so far. If a kid gets really into a sport, he or she will follow closely what the top players are doing. If the top players are gambling, or are perceived as gambling, then that perception will instantly be adopted by the kids.

My impression, by the way, is that a lot of people don't currently think of backgammon as a gambling game. If they know of it at all, they think of it as a kids' board game. So it's not impossible that it could gain respectability and avoid the "taint" of gambling. But you can't expect to achieve that purely through careful handling at the school level; what happens at the national and international level will inevitably filter down rather quickly despite any attempts you make to prevent it.
