"Changing the terminology will only go so far. If a kid gets really into a sport, he or she will follow closely what the top players are doing. If the top players are gambling, or are perceived as gambling, then that perception will instantly be adopted by the kids."
Top players enter tournaments and win potentially large cash prizes. How is that different from any other sport? Shall we ban tennis from schools? How much of the backgammon "press" focuses on money-game play? Almost none from what I have seen.
Even amongst Muslims who are not permitted to gamble, tournament play with cash prizes is permitted, and backgammon is a prominent and accepted part of their culture (Middle East, Turkey, Iran) and is taught to children. Are you suggesting it is ok for them, but not for us?
