In Response To: Legal question: Can Evals, Rollouts be copyrighted? (J. Dawkins)

Quoting: First off, let's remember that there is no such thing as copyright for any kind of object if the object is sold, advertised, distributed or similarly using a Web that was originally made for sharing and distributing, for free, information, research and learning.

Nonsense.

Imagine the surprise of all the copyright holders of "all" of the "objects" "sold, advertised" or "distributed" at, say, amazon.com, to name just one website, that none of those "objects" have copyright protection.

And Michael, if you want a legal opinion, consult a lawyer familiar with the law applicable in your jurisdiction. Copyright law is not identical in all countries. To my nonlawyerly mind, a match itself is not protectable, positions themselves are not protectable, but a question would arise whether a collection of positions, or the time and effort both drudgelike and intellectual of generating evaluative data, merits protection under copyright law. I think the implication entailed in your question contrasting a (printed) book and material "published" online is misdirecting; again, my understanding is that copyright law affords protection to intellectual property from the moment it is placed in a "fixed medium," a term which covers both a printed book and computer file.
