I can't answer your question as to 'what should happen here' because if we take a break and I'm leaving the table I usually write down the amount of time both people had left on the score sheet, put the clock in pause mode (and remember to take it off pause mode when I return to the table), and even take a picture of the clock before I leave. Take these countermeasurements beforehand and there's never a problem. Common sense is a wicked thing to possess.
