it's harder to get the cube up to 8, or 16, or 32.

Not really. Though you can't beaver, on your turn you simply cube, it's up to 4. Assuming the bot doesn't think it's tg next turn, it'll turn it to 8 automatically. Rinse, repeat as necessary.
