The implications for the accuracy of GNU 2-ply or 4-ply rollouts is a little disturbing, because it seems that this kind of position isn't that unusual.

I don't follow. Do you mean rollouts of opening rolls? Even then, (a) this is but one of a whole lot of 3rd or 4th or 5th (which is it?) positions, and (b) even though the 2- and 4-ply evaluations are way off, your and Paul's rollouts indicate that the wrong take/drop decision is at most only a small error.
