Hi Neil:
Your sessions with Deeb to the contrary, I've seen a number of examples that suggest the best player may not win the most money. As an example there was a player back when I lived in Vegas who was good for $50 to $100 a week. That's single session at the Sunday tournament, playing for $2. (And that was the difference between TV dinners or TGIF for me back in early 1982!) That money came like clockwork - the man couldn't win. I mean, couldn't win! But there were other players that were weak intermediates that regularly beat him for thousands. It wasn't only that the most he would play me for was nickels, because the most he played for with them was dimes. The difference was that he knew I was a (much) better player, and would only concede so much. With the others, despite all he lost, he must have convinced himself that somehow he had a prayer of winning. He was "willin' to take the drillin'!"
Ask yourself who the biggest money winner in Chicago is and you'll know exactly what I am talking about. (If you don't know what I am talking about, then you don't know who the biggest money winner in Chicago is.)(Or at least, was - I haven't played there in nearly a decade so it is possible things have changed.)
Best,
Jake
