But I do think I see your point in "what's the point." Why waste practice time that won't help you win more against human players?

I resisted, too, testing some claims I'd seen in rec.games.backgammon that somebody or other could beat the newest bots. Although some years ago John Bazigos had written about how an early Snowie was very beatable in "point game" sessions by steering games to outside prime positions, like you I figured the bots were much better now in backgame and outside priming -- which they are. But in 2007 I played some money games against Gnubg and racked up megapoints by exploiting Gnubg's weaknesses in these two areas. Two or three other readers at GammonU then wrote that they had also tried the same techniques and were successful.

Stick, did you ever finish your July 2008 set of 100 DMP matches against Gnubg ?
