I'm surprised by this basic holding game

I guess the 9 pt means more than I'd thought even though it often cannot be kept for long

What do you consider 'long'? To me it seems like it can be held for an extremely long time, relatively speaking. At least 3 turns (if needed) is a long time, don't you think? You'll play the spare off the midpoint, you'll play the spare off the eight point, you may roll smallish a roll in there and there you go, 3 turns, or 4 rolls, with the 9pt still made.
