I'd like to add my commendation here also. Peoria is player friendly since the hotel owner is a backgammon player! I was walking across the street to some other third rate hotel, and on Monday morning the van driver failed to get me to the Peoria airport in time to make my flight, (even though we left before 4 am for a 6 am flight!). My calls to complain have gone unanswered. The money I saved was lost re-ticketing my flight.
If I had gotten pneumonia walking in the rain... ?
If Bill Riles had not given me several rides back to my hotel ?
If I had been able to win from 7-0/11 in the third round vs. new open player Michael Flohr (?) Nice tournament btw, MF, you beat a LOT of other players!
It was great to see two Boogers in the finals, and I was torn between whom to root for. I congratulated David Rubin on finally breaking through, and I forgive him for being excited enough about winning to exclaim: YES! and pump his fist. Winning an ABT event is a BIG deal.
John O'Hagan won his third consolation in a ROW, (I believe), after losing his first round match in the main flight. That is amazing! He did it twice at this event winning the Thursday night conso, in addition to the Illinois State Championship Consolation. That indicates strong play, of course, but probably more importantly... Mental toughness. It is easy to go in the tank because you were unlucky in the first round, but John O? Oh no!
Another post listed Neil and Stick as the best two players here. I'll take John O' Hagan and MCG in an all star event exclusive on pay per view TV without much remorse!
Thank you Linda and David Rockwell... Thank you Ed Zell for the beer and a fine rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by your two lovely daughters...
I'll stay at the venue next time!
