I think those types of events, properly promoted and supported, could be quite beneficial to the growth of the game.
Imagine the potential interest in various countries if we had a World Cup Series of 10-person teams. Pick the top eight backgammon countries in the world -- Denmark, US, France, UK, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Bulgaria, Georgia, whomever.
Pairings are by blind draw. Host countries are by draw in quarterfinals and semifinals. Country federations or organizations (if the US had one !!) would select team members.
Imagine the potential interest that could be generated with matches such as UK vs. France; Denmark vs. Germany; US vs. Japan; etc.
Have the quarterfinals all having to be played in May (as an example), the semifinals having to be played in June, and the finals in July. The host team of the finals could be the finals team with the best cumulative w/l record in the quarters and the semis.
With the rounds being a month apart the winning teams and host teams should be able to get a lot of multi-media and print attention in their countries.
It is nice to dream.
