I have to commend any director that is willing to take the time and make the effort to hold a tournament. I admire Elaine and her staff for this. This is something that I am not prepared to do myself and I therefore do not have the right to complain. However, we all have the right to provide constructive criticism in an effort to improve things, and directors should take such feedback to heart and make their best efforts to listen and to improve. And while I believe that there is much truth in what was said here, and I had my own set of issues, I think it is important that the feedback be kept constructive and not personal. In the end, if directors either don't learn, or simply don't make the attempt, people will stop attending.
And while I applaud this tournament for listening to what the players want and having a clock friendly event, it is an issue in general to not understand clock usage. Because even without a clock friendly policy, how can a director ever require a clock on matches that are holding up the tournament if they don't know what to do if the need arises?
I don't think it is an accident that the best run tournaments are also the best attended tournaments. Certain decisions that on the surface might be viewed as necessary in order to make a tournament cover expenses, like taking late entries or allowing any and every player to enter any and every side event regardless of conflicts, ultimately cause problems and delays. Not wanting to upset people running behind by imposing clocks ultimately causes delays. In the end, people are more upset than if the problems were simply dealt with proactively. The strongest directors do these things and it may cause them to upset specific individuals at particular moments, but in the end it is a well run tournament and almost everyone leaves happy, and they come back the following year and they bring a friend. That is how it should be done. That is the lesson that all aspiring directors must learn and embrace.
