Wisconsin Backgammon Championship Tournament format

the time i went, they played 9 rounds of swiss. those that had 3 losses were out and those with fewer were plugged into a KO bracket. I have been exposed to swiss qualifers for KO tourneys (from duplicate bridge). and thought that that was what was being aimed for --- wrong! the player that had won every swiss match argued that he should be byed into the final. I thought that to be VERY wrong, but that was due to my experience with swiss qual. That was the loosest part of this tourney --- that the conditions of contest didn't spell out exactly where the 9-0, 8-1, etc players would go (as far as the KO part of the tourney) --- this IS difficult as you never KNOW how many people will win how many matches.
At least the "all swiss" format avoids this confusion (tho may have others?). I think the swiss qual would avoid this as well if the undefeated players don't have to play ALL the swiss rounds, but rather get a break while the remainder of the KO field is determined.
