Your method, as I understood it, was: assign:

1/2 point for each player with no losses 1/4 point for each player with one loss 1/8 point for each player with two losses

Close the Swiss when the sum of these values equals one or less.

Is this correct?

Your system worked pretty well but not perfectly IIRC. I believe the staff decided to override it this year because (as I recall being told) the results would have produced *ugly* drawsheets.

It seems as though the problem of achieving a clean draw for the knockout tournament doesn't yield easily to arithmetic solutions (or does it--you would know better than I). I am beginning to think they should just end the Swiss after 8 rounds and apportion byes to the 6-2 players according to one or more of the tiebreak methods used commonly in chess. This would be somewhat arbitrary but at least transparent.
