Wisconsin Backgammon Championship Tournament format

I have been in contact with Patrick discussing his "More Swiss" method. It's not quite 100% Swiss, but it does eliminate the playoff. It worked very well the one time it was used and I will spend time this winter running simulations trying to predict any difficulties. It does seem to be a very clean way to run the Swiss and it works out to just as many rounds for most players.
Run the Swiss as normal (players with like records are paired, players with 4 losses are eliminated, etc.) until the number of players left equals the number of places you wish to pay. At that point, anyone with 3 losses is paid and done. Anyone better continues until they either have three losses or win the event.
Here are a few minor obstacles, which i think the BG world can handle if players are okay with some uncertainty... 1. Given the format, the number of places that get paid has to be a range, depending on how many people get eliminated in the "last" round of stage 1. In Madison, with 45-50 players, we would prefer to pay to 5,6 or 7 places. So we would have to post three prize schedules and announce which one applies. 2. There will most likely be three or four players tied for 4th-7th place at the end of stage 1. Just like a golf tourney, we would sum the $$ and split it. Not controversial, just something I haven't seen in the BG world. 3. There are many scenarios that end with 3 players with the same record, so we have to know how to handle 3 person playoffs. This includes the twist where 1 person had an early round bye and isn't eligible for the late round bye. We know how to do these, but it isn't comfortable.
Please discuss...
