As stupid as the rule appears in this circumstance (and it certainly does), it is quite simple to remedy. Don't roll early, wait until the opponent picks up his dice, regardless of the circumstance.

I just cannot understand why so many find this so difficult to do.

I just focus on the board and I never even begin to shake the dice until my opponent picks up his dice. No problem.
