In Response To: Wisconsin Backgammon Championship Tournament format (David Rockwell)

David, I have tried using abstracted methods to simulate the Swiss and I can't get past a pairings problem. It turns out that the matchups in the late rounds really depend on which pairing rules are more important. (i.e. if you have to break one pairing rule to satisfy another, which wins?) Here they are, in the order we used in Madison: (Note for those considering running a Swiss: you should know your precedence order for these rules ahead of time.)

1. No player can receive a second bye until all remaining players have had at least one bye. 2. Byes are awarded to a player with the worst possible record. 3. Do not pair players who have already played. 4. Pair players with like records 5. If the number of players with a particular record is odd, one player must play "down". No player can play down twice unless all remaining players in the group have played down at least once. 6. If the number of players with a particular record is odd, one player must play "up". No player will be asked to play up twice unless all remaining players in the group have played up at least once.

For example, in our second year running the Swiss, we gave rule 4 precedence over rule 3 and Steve Brown played Brad Andersen twice. In the second matchup, if Brad won, they would have been paired a third time. Now, we give precedence to rule 3, but that means that occasionally we can have more matches in a round with mixed-record pairings. That messes up the math.
