Wisconsin Backgammon Championship Tournament format

We did use it last year, and not this year.
We used a scoring system based on a eight player draw. everyone with 0 losses got 4 points. Players with 1 loss got 2 points and players with 2 losses got 1 point. When the score drops to 8 or less, it is time to stop the Swiss and transition to a playoff. Players get entries into the knockout matching their score. i.e. the zero loss player is seeded into the finals because he got 4 "entries."
It turns out that the "ugliness" of the playoff sheet comes from the fact that very rarely does a round end with a score of exactly 8 (or 16). Some people react rather badly when others get late round byes into cash. Since we advertised the algorithm, we stuck to it, but we were able to see that with one more round of Swiss, we could have eliminated multiple byes in the playoff.
So this year we reverted to the traditional Indy method of monitoring the Swiss for a more comfortable exit point. I will say three things. First, yes it is opaque to do things this way. Secondly, it worked for Butch Meese for many years because it does work. Finally, the WBC tournament staff is very carefully considering the ideas that people post and send to us. Our pre-tournament planning covered much of this same ground and we decided we just didn't have enough info to make changes this year. But next year....
