"I believe that in an issue of Flint there was what I thought was an authoritative statement by CJC that Crawford game doubles are invalid, period. This (following DBgF's example) is a simple and excellent interpretation of the Crawford rule. Why would other ABT directors not be following it? "
Answer: they are. Now. The ABT rule was revised to remove this ambiguity by stating that the doubling cube is not part of the game equipment during the Crawford game and therefore a double can no more happen in the Crawford game than a player dropping down a royal flush on the board and claiming victory. (Of course this is another example where one could still question - "what if they fail to remove the cube from play".
5.5 CRAWFORD RULE. When either player reaches one point from victory, the next game (the “Crawford game”) shall be played to conclusion with a cube value of 1. The cube shall be removed from the board during the Crawford game.
As Phil would say, why not just clearly state the INTENT of the rule and say "this means that any double given does not count, even if accepted by the opponent").
But the rules should also address what happens if both players fail to realize this until several games later in the match after the trailing player has already scored "2" (or more) on his scoresheet, particularly if both players believed they were playing to a longer match length.
