Another Tough Chouette Ruling

One can try to rewrite rules so that they are clearer and more complete.
Another (and not exclusive) approach would be to publish, in addition to the rules, a small, authoritative collection of rules interpretations, arising from actual situations, which would govern rulings in similar situations in the future.
Two DBgF rules mention the Crawford game. One (about placing of the doubling cube), states that the cube shall be removed entirely from the board in the Crawford game. The other rule is this:
"CRAWFORD RULE. The Crawford rule applies in all matches. In the first game where a player is one point from winning the match, neither player may double. In any subsequent games the doubling cube may be used again. If a player doubles in the Crawford game, the double must be annulled in the following situations:
"1) If the Crawford game is in progress.
"When the double is annulled in an ongoing game, the game continues without the use of the doubling cube.
"2) If the Crawford game is over, but the next game has not started.
"When the double is annulled between two games, the players' score cards are corrected so that the number of points won in the Crawford game corresponds to the number of points that would have been won if there had been no double.
"3) If the Crawford game has ended the match, but the match results have not been registered by the tournament director.
"When the double is annulled after the match, the players' score cards are corrected so that the number of points won corresponds to the number of points that would have been won if there had been no double, and the match is resumed.
"Tournament Director has a duty to intervene, if he becomes aware that a cube has been turned in the Crawford game, and annul the double."
