3 person play-offs should simply be handled with a bye and an equitable division of the prize pool. One third of the prize pool is paid to the semi-finalists that do not get a bye. The remaining two thirds is paid to the finalists. Eveyone's equity is 1/3. And if a player is ineligible for a bye, then don't give him one. Yes, things like trophies and ABT points are also at stake, but nothing is perfect. And nothing says that ABT rules could not be ammended to allowing equitable divisions of points as well.
