I can completely understand that the director and only the director can set a match length and neither agreement nor incompetence by the players can be justification for changing it. The director should have the backing of the rules if they need to make a decision to impose the posted match length. And players should know that this risk exists - so check the drawsheet.

That said, I would never find myself in such a situation because I always verify the match length regardless of what my opponent tells me. And there is no excuse for anyone else to find themselves in such a situation either. And if for some reason I screwed up and we both played to a different length and finished and neither of us realized it, I'd expect whichever of us won to simply report the win. I would never dream of trying to get a win out of a match that I played to too high a score and lost.
