In Response To: My thoughts for a potential rule change... (Robert Maier)

There seems to be so much casual acceptance of the rule as it stands that it's nice to see someone with actual directing experience agree with me. If the players have played a match to completion, nothing is served by artificially rewinding it and declaring a new winner. It's not a "punishment," it's just completely arbitrary. And of course, since both players are equally to blame it's absurd to reward one of them.

If the error is discovered mid-match it's a tougher call, and I would probably just leave it to the director's discretion since there's so many possible cases. I remember one tournament long ago (I think Joe Miller was the director) where a player had an 8-0 lead to 9, his opponent came back to tie it at 8-8, and during the DMP game they somehow realized that it was supposed to be a 7-pointer. The ruling was that they would finish out the match, which struck me as brilliant and 100% fair. It's in the spirit of competition to have matches decided over the board rather than by some ruling. Although I always felt bad for the guy who ended up losing after he led 8-0 in a 7-pointer!

The rules should continue to specify that players may not agree to play to a different length, however. If someone wants to play a 1-pointer for the trophy, or if the match length isn't challenging enough so they want to play to 19, the director's approval is necessary.
