My thoughts for a potential rule change...

I agree with the "spirit of competition" sentiment, and also believe that generally speaking, it is within the director's powers under the existing rules to consider the situation and allow the match to be finished/recorded as played in the interest of fairness. And in most cases, this is likely the right thing to do if it will not affect the timely running of the event, and if there is no reason to believe the change to match length was deliberate. To do this legally under the current rule, all the director has to do is make a note on the drawsheet next to the particular match in question that it is 9 points instead of 7. It is then the posted match length (and by the way, clear for the person entering the match results for stats purposes).
But I also believe that the director must have the recourse and backing of the rules to impose the posted length in the currently perscribed manner if he feels that is warranted by the situation. The rules can't take the position of do whatever you want or no need to bother checking the drawsheet because there's no risk in case of error. The director (not the players) must ultimately authorize play to a non-default match length, and such authorization should take the form of an edit to the drawsheet (even if retroactively).
