In Response To: Common sense should prevail (Steve Mellen)

Rory "I have heard that the reason the rule was written the way it was has to do with a case where 2 players chose to play a match to a longer length than what was deemed by the tournament. There were also cases where a stronger player stated that the match length was longer than it actually was and the weaker player accepted the statement rather than checking its accuracy."

Neil replies, Yes, that is my understanding of the reasons for this rule.

Steve "95% of the time, the error will be due to honest confusion rather than one of the two cases you describe. The rule should still bar the players from agreeing to change the match length, but it doesn't make sense to apply a completely arbitrary rule in 95% of the cases to make sure nothing bad happens in the other 5%."

Neil replies that in his experience, it is more like 99% and 1%. Very rarely have players agreed to change match lengths w/out director approval. And if they pulled that crap in any T I was running they'd both be forfeited.

Almost always the mistake is do to players not realizing that match length is different.

Common sense would say that when the players have finished the match to the length they've mistakeningly agreed to, that the results STANDS.

If the error is discovered during the match, then it can be handled on a case by case basis. The reason for the arbitrary rule is to make it straight forward to handle.
