The Whole Picture Here

I believe, however, that even a pigeon will usually find the right gammon-saving play regardless--it will just take him longer than a good player.
Bleh, there's so much wrong with all this I don't even know where to begin.
1) Although the rule is unambiguous it doesn't necessarily save time regardless of whether a fish or a shark is playing. Many players either don't seem to understand the rule or just don't claim it when they can and it would be beneficial to do so. So maybe the sharks win more from the fish than they otherwise would anyway. It took me a while to understand exactly how the rule worked (maybe because it was so counterintuitive to me).
2) Although you get your "best" it is only as good as "your best that you and/or your teammates/opponents can find"...e.g. if I hadn't found 4/1 with the 21 and 12/6 1/o with the 61 it's exceptionally unlikely that one of my opponents would have suggested it.
3) It can change the dynamic of the game even many rolls in advance.
The score (after 0 games) is: gnubg 3, Atrifix 6
Move number 5: Atrifix to play 64
gnubg 97
Atrifix 57 Position ID: 23YDAGDb7g4AAA Match ID: UQkTADAAMAAA

4) I probably missed several other pertinent points.
Does it save time? Sure, probably. Is it an ok rule? I don't have that much of a problem with it...whatever. Is it different from 'pure' backgammon? Well, yeah, but so are a bunch of other things. Do I care? Not really.
