A Puzzle that Reall matters

You and I agree and disagree at the same time on many points. I would absolutely like to see tournament backgammon become like bridge...no money, just glory and points. I think the game would grow tremendously if we did that. I have advocated that for years and have supported the USBL which was formed just for that purpose.
At the same time, there is a place for money play. While open tournaments should be about the skill and competition, there can still be separate events for the pros who want to play for the big money. And there can always be private games and chouettes for money.
As for the reasons people play in chouettes, I doubt there are 10 people in the US that consistently make money playing chouette backgammon....most either break about even, lose a little, make a little, and of course, there are some that lose a lot. My experience has been that most of those who lose a lot eventually disappear because they either run out of money or get tired of donating.
So that means that most of the play is not about the money...however, even if it's not all about the money, NOBODY LIKES TO LOSE, and EVERYONE is happy to see some fish in the game simply because it increases your chances of winning.
The same is true in a tournament...aren't you happy when you look at the draw sheet and see that you next opponent is Joe Nobody and not Neil Kazaross or Steve Sax?
