I also wanted to address that quote about the assholes also being the fish. The point of that was that by changing to no consulting, they stopped being such assholes. I also want to clarify that even some of the better, more experienced players sometimes acted like assholes when their partner wouldn't make their play, and by going to non-consulting, it stopped them as well.
Now, we have the same people in the game, but we don't have many assholes any more. The people didn't leave, but the behavior did.
This issue HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH TAKING MONEY FROM FISH. I actually quit the chouette when the assholes (fish) were getting too nasty to deal with...so did others. We ended up having some quiet, private games for weeks without inviting the fish (again proving it was not just about the money). Going to no-consulting has allowed us to open up the chou again, and I enjoy having more people in the game not just because we get more fish, but I think bigger chouettes are fun. Also, those people who were assholes are really nice, fun people if you take away their ability to scream and argue about every play.
