It may well be that you want to pass conservatively to avoid the box, Phil.
So much of backgammon "strategy" is an oxymoron. We tend to think that the box is the place to be because that is where we could potentially win the most money... But it is also the place you can LOSE the most.
The best player on the outside often gets free points to keep him from consulting, and he can utilize that fear to get chicken passes after the box has taken a cube or two.
The right answer may be that you should just do the right thing... and probably never over-reach to take a cube based on the promise of "getting the box" or holding the box.
