In Response To: An ethics issue raised in Paris? (Perry Gartner)

Great point, Perry... I didn't consider this angle. I did discuss the tip with my partner and a local relative he had. I was concerned with the appearance... and the reaction it would get. I wondered if it would be over the top or whatever, and how it would be perceived by the French.

I never considered the favoritism implications of the gesture. All directors of tournaments I have won, (including Elayne Feinstein), can tell you that it is standard operating procedure for me to tip... sometimes generously.

Many a player and firefighter back at home has enjoyed a free meal on me when I win. I consider it good karma, and as long as I am buying dinners and tipping, then I know that I have been successful.

I did not do this flippantly, or without due regard. I just think that at least in America... Where ABT directors have a difficult time making ends meet, and seem to a man to be very reluctant to pass their expense woes onto their players... it helps them with their bottom line.

In doing auctions I have often reminded the players that at the end of a weekend of full service from a tournament director and his staff... IF you have been lucky enough to win, THEN it is a GREAT time to tip them.

I think when someone has never won, they don't even think about it because they are in unfamiliar territory... Even though they will give the damn slow waitress that served them coffee that morning and brought them a BILL 15% out of social convention.

Backgammon players should show some class and tip when they win. That is my message. When you get an envelope with bills in it, instead of a bill at the end of the service... Throw a few the director's way. As Chiva did, most of them will merely pass it on to their staff. Another sign of class!
