An ethics issue raised in Paris?

I might add here that Chiva was called to make one ruling in our third round match in the European Championships.
I was confident I would win that ruling because the French player had entered our checker from the bar and hit his clock, leaving HIS checker still on the bar and us with none. An absolutely HUGE advantage for us.
Chiva made a ruling that I had never heard of before...
Fair play takes precedence, and the French player was allowed to put his checker back in and ours to remain on the bar.
My partner didn't feel this was right, and I knew that according to the rules strictly adhered to "by the letter"... The ruling could have/should have(?) gone the other way...
However, fair play takes precedence seemed to me to be overall good for the game so I accepted the ruling without a rioutous protest. I believe there are those who would have raised the roof in the same situation!
So, Chiva made a ruling against me in this tourmanent and our team still wanted to reward him for a job well done.
It could be argued that he ruled against me BECAUSE he didn't want to appear to be showing favoritism, when you think about it. Sasan is his friend also, btw.
Anyway, I believe Chiva was just doing things the way that he does them, plain and simple. I thought his ruling was refreshing in concept, even if it was not in our/my best interests!
