An ethics issue raised in Paris?

I completely agree with Phil here.
We must live and learn from our mistakes.
Personally, I do like the concept of fair play. I have seen opponents make mistakes and offer them to play differently to their own advantage, before I roll, but that's just me.
But like Ray says, "I believe there are those who would have raised the roof in the same situation!" And I know many of those that would.
Specific rules have been created to handle specific situations, with the forethought of resolving situations fairly. There's no two ways about it, it’s either right or right. If we do not "live by the letter" of the rules, what are rules good for?
What if Player A is holding a 2 cube and re-cubes but forgets to turn the cube to 4 and Player B accepts it on 2?
What if I missed seeing a match-winning hit, played something else and then I see my mistake after I pick up my dice. Should I call the director over and ask him for a ruling? If it’s all about “fair play” then surely he should decide that it was accidental mistake, and that I should be allowed to change my move and, deservedly, go on to win the match. Where do we draw the line?
