I agree with you guys - If the rules are clear, you have to judge according to them. If the rules are clear you can not use paragraph 1. For sure if someone makes an illegal play and hits the clock it MUST stand even when the illegal play is that he forgot to make his move or by accident put his own checker on the bar! If the time runs out when you have 99,9% match winning chance you have lost. If you after the opening roll hit the clock when it is your turn without moving anything the opponent is entitled to pick up the dice and roll (of cause your opponent can let him make his move if he is nice). Of cause there can be a gray zone and in my opinion this is where you can use paragraph 1. If your opponent provoked the error by pretending to hit the clock or something like that it might be in the gray zone. I have seen many strange rulings in my career and this is why you have a committee. As a player you can ALWAYS ask for a committee ruling if you do not agree with the tournament directors ruling. If I am a tournament director I will always ask the committee before a controversial ruling, just to clear my back 100%. Therefore it is also very important that the people in a committee knows the rules well and acts according to them and not based on feelings or a good relation to one of the players. Backgammon is a serious game when played on this level and everyone playing on this level must know the rules and act according to them or at least expect and respect that your opponent does.
