In Response To: An ethics issue raised in Paris? (Chuck Bower)

How to involve the "people" is a problem if there is no way to determine who the people really are and who speaks for the people. However, we are on the verge of a new player's federation, and hopefully, once enough serious backgammon players join and support that organization, that organization will have a right to say that they truly represent the interests of the players. And if they form a Rules committee, and their rules committee polls the members and gets a consensus on a given rule, and they recommend it to the ABT or WBA or whoever, then it means something. This is one of the many reasons I have been an advocate of an association that represents players interests.

Hopefully, this will move forward, and hopefully there will be a rules committee, and hopefully, they will get input from the players on this site as well as the tournament directors and their membership and board BEFORE making a recommendation, and hopefully, as a result, we will see improvement in the many areas you, I, Rich Munitz, Harvey Gillis, Perry Gartner, and many others have pointed out need improvement in the game of Backgammon.

So be a little patient...I don't think we are too far away from seeing this happen.

The good news is that even if we see rules instituted that we are not wild about, at least we can't "blame" a small, elite group of tournament directors for the rule....and they can't take the blame either. The rules will be known to have been made after getting input from all; after being debated in forums such as this; and after a very experienced and respect committee has worked carefully on the wording to make the rule as concise and unambiguous and fair as possible.
