In Response To: An ethics issue raised in Paris? (Rich Munitz)

There are several people that I play legal moves with by agreement. I have always preferred legal moves. Once when playing in the semifinals of a large tournament in Los Angeles against Odis Chenault, in which we had no agreement to play legal moves, I rolled a 6-1 that was forced to leave a shot on my 8 point. I did not see it and thought I had no six. Odis did not see it and we proceeded to finish the game and I won it and with it the match. A kibitzer pointed out that I had not played the 6-1 and I realized that he was right. Unfortunately for me, I remembered the exact position and offered to replay the game from that point. Odis, to his credit, practically insisted we not play and that I had won. After much debate, we did replay the game and he went on to hit the shot, win the game, and later the match. I was quite sad that I had lost but felt good about the way it had been handled. Later, after Odis won the final match, he insisted we split all prize money, I told him that was not necessary, he persisted in his demand and we did. We both walked away feeling very good about the experience. I would not have felt as well had I won the tournament because of an inadvertent illegal play.

The problems I see with making legal moves a rule are: (1)the players of the highest character are put at a disadvantage by this rule; (2)an honest player's integrity may be questioned if he fails to point out an illegal move.

I am not opposed to trying legal moves as I think the vast majority of players are honest, but I am not sure it is a better rule, everything considered.

There is nothing wrong with agreeing to play legal moves with someone you trust. I think that may be the better alternative, although problem(2), above, could still occur.
