I have always believed that one of two things should be the case: if you move a checker, it stays moved, or, if you move a checker, you put it at the pointed end of the pip and not against the side rail or other checkers, and if you do that you can put the checker back, but once you put it against the other checkers or the side rail, you can not longer put it back. This will help eliminate much of the risk of moving the wrong checker back to a wrong starting position.
We have one player in our chou who moves checkers back and for all the time, and he often gets mixed up which checker was moved, and we have nicely asked him to put the checkers at the end of the pips, and he has agreed to do this and it truly has stopped a lot of the problems.
