At this matchscore, White is looking for a chance to send a (somewhat gammonish) cube. We should keep that in mind. For now:
Blue leads the race but White can take the lead with big dubs. Blue has a lot of checkers on the midpoint to get home; in the meantime White will be improving the homeboard (abondoning the midpoint when necessary).
Giving up the 7-point, either completely or by making the 2-point is inconsistent with Blue's gameplan of blocking and/or getting home safely.
Slotting one outfield point (and moving the spare off the midpoint) is a 'tweener' play. Of the two, it seems like duping White's fives is the better choice: 13/9, 6/1.
The alternative is bringing two down from the mid- now. It certainly appears to maximize chances for making a new outfield (blocking/landing) point. Is it worth the risk?
Since the plays seem close, let's bring out the microscope. Downside of the tweener slot play is the strippage of homeboard builders. When missed on the 9-point you may still have to lift, even with some rolls that can cover, in order to keep from adding a new blot in the outfield. OTOH, the matchscore does tend to push one away from laying out two blots.
Here, with the advantage of plenty of contemplation time (and a bit of QF :), it's hard for me to reject the pure play of 13/8, 13/9. OtB I likely would have been scared away from this and played 13/9, 6/1.
