Onetime shuffle rule

Thank you for your thoughtful post, and best regards.
...might frighten some experienced and inexperienced players. Is it the right time to scare the newcomers?
Your concern is valid. At one time, use of the doubling cube was viewed much the same way (and perhaps still is by some). The concept of not moving until one has decided on a choice seems like a relatively small step to me.
It also seems to me (of the groups you included above) that the rule change would affect people that have played the game for a while (those that have gotten into the habit of shuffling) rather than those just learning the game.
Why should backgammon adapt to chess and not the opposite?(2 different games why 1 rules must be adapt to both)?
Such adaptation is not really my point. But since you brought it up, it's not just chess to which backgammon would be adapting by touch move (or partially adapting by one-shuffle). It's hard to think of other games whereby it is considered legal or appropriate to alter the current board position mid-move -- placing and retracting candidate moves on the board before making one's real move.
I was aware that the touch move issue had been discussed before (though not to the evident degree of passion on both sides). I reraised it because it seems to me that the one-shuffle rule (preferably including high-pip and full reset courtesies) as either a compromise or a transition is a third alternative worth considering.
